One of the best 35mm medium telephoto lenses, November 4, 2004 By This review is from: 90mm f/2.8 G-Sonnar T* Lens for G2 (Electronics) The Carl Zeiss 90mm f2.8 Sonnar lens for the Contax G autofocus 35mm rangefinder cameras is among the finest medium telephoto lenses I have used in 35mm photography. It produces sharp and contrasty photographs at all of its apertures, especially wide open at f2.8. It is as good a performer as the Leica M 90mm f2 Apo-Summicron under practical working conditions; under test conditions, the Leica lens is probably better. I am glad I have this lens as part of my Contax G2 kit. This splendid lens has received considerable praise from several major photography magazines, most notably Popular Photography.

It's relatively fast speed, coupled with it's perfect optics is ideal for anyone wanting to take great pictures - even in low light situations. Plus it's perfect for portraits where you can step back and give the subject a little room to relax; or for other types of photography where you need to get in a little closer for the details. I would not hesitate to recommend this to anyone - but first you have to get the camera it works with (i.e., the G1/G2) which has unfortunately been discontinued since the company has decided to no longer be in business.
one of the best 'legacy' lens for Nex, February 10, 2012 By This review is from: 90mm f/2.8 G-Sonnar T* Lens for G2 (Electronics) I had this lens from my Contax G2 days and recently bought an adapter to use it on a sony Nex5. It was 1 of the best RF lens in this focal range (I also had a Leica 90mm/2.8, a Leica 75mm/1.4 and a Minolta Rokkor 90mm/4 for the CLE) in its days and found a new life on mirrorless with the appropriate adapter.
It won't AF and you'll have to set aperture manually on the lens itself but if your subject does cooperate (by staying still), its well worth the effort. Color, contrast and IQ are superb and the small size complements a camera like the Sony Nex perfectly.
I have seen this lens at $700+ and wont pay this amount but at $200-$300 it's a steal. You won't find a better portrait/tele lens, even if a good adapter will add $100 to the price. Sony does make a 50mm 1.8 about that size which will AF as a native lens but still difficult to get (at $500-$600. The Contax is slower with a longer reach (equivalent to 135mm)and I guess i'll have room for both in my bag.
